As many of you will know, Riesling is both my favourite variety as well as Rafe's favourite variety - as well as the biggest selling white wine at our cellar door! At our vineyard at Bream Creek we have a small block of Riesling that was planted in 1974 - amongst the oldest commercial Riesling blocks in Tasmania. These vines are low yielding, so rarely produce enough fruit to make a separate (Reserve/old vine) wine. In 2025 they did, and we were very excited!
Our 2025 'Old Vine' Reserve Riesling is made in a distinctly different, more textural way that our 2025 Estate Riesling - 2/3 of this wine was fermented and matured in old French oak barrels for 9 months, and the remaining 1/3 fermented in tank and left on less for 9 months.
We already mentioned that Mike Bennie and Gary Walsh over at the Wine Front are fans, both giving this wine 96 points. You can now add a third 96 point review, this time from Huon Hooke, chief wine writer at The Real Review. Huon writes: “Very light yellow with a fresh lemon-pith aroma leading into a fuller style palate with rich fruit and a long carry. Superior concentration here. A very smart wine, which will age superbly.”
